Many Palestinians gathered to watch the lighting. Bethlehem mayor Maher Canawati said the lighting of the Christmas tree in Bethlehem was a message of hope for Palestinians, to Gaza and to the world. It describes the “Israelization” of the West Bank, with special attention on Beit Sahour and the Bethlehem area. While the video features footage of violence, it portrays Palestinians not only as victims but also as agents who actively resist through creative nonviolence and cultural strength. The Arms Embargo Now campaign continues with unabated energy, calling on the Canadian government “to immediately suspend all trade in arms and military technology with Israel.” A recent report specifies in detail the loopholes in Canadian regulations that facilitate the arms trade with Israel. While direct exports require permits, indirect exports, whereby Canadian arms are shipped to Israel through transfers via the United States, make use of this major loophole, thus “exempting military exports to the US from having to go through Canada’s permitting requirements, human rights risk assessment regime, and any measure of transparency.” Member of Parliament Jenny Kwan has introduced Bill C-233 – the No More Loopholes Bill – which, if passed, would close this loophole. This is the third time she has been incarcerated. She was first imprisoned in 2021 and then re-arrested in April 2024 on “administrative detention,” a procedure widely used by Israel to confine people without any evidence presented against them. The Jerusalem Declaration has been endorsed by over 300 international scholars in the fields of Holocaust history and Jewish and Middle Eastern studies. The full text, available here, asserts that support for justice and equal rights for Palestinians and evidence-based criticism of Zionism or of Israeli government policies and practices are not antisemitic. The UCC’s action implicitly rejects the IHRA definition, which was adopted by Canada in 2019 and has been widely used to weaponize the term “antisemitism,” label almost any criticism of Israeli government policy and practice as “antisemitic,” and stifle free speech. At the same meeting, the UCC also authorized contributing actively to the development of a post-Gaza theology and affirming UCC support for the creation of a Palestinian state. Father David Neuhaus is a Jewish citizen of Israel, born in South Africa to German Jewish refugees from Nazi persecution, converted to Roman Catholicism in 1988, joined the Society of Jesus in 1992, and was ordained a priest in 2000. It urges Canada to impose “political, economic, and diplomatic consequences” on Israel as a result of Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank, and its “persistent refusal to comply with international law." The statement additionally calls “for the international community to hold Israel and Hamas accountable for their violations of international law.” It states the obvious, that President Trump’s proposal for the future of the Gaza Strip “is tantamount to full-scale ethnic cleansing.” It condemns the increasing “Gazafication” of all of the West Bank by Israeli forces, including armed settlers. It caused the forced displacement of 750,000 Palestinians from 78 percent of the total traditional land of Palestine, the deaths of at least 15,000 Palestinian Arabs, the destruction or depopulation of over 500 Arab-majority towns, and large-scale efforts by Israeli settler militias and IDF troops to permanently fragment Palestinian society. Our issue will feature an autobiographical reflection by a friend of CFOS whose family suffered through the Nakba. Additionally, Kairos Palestine is calling for a Day of Global Action and Solidarity on Nakba Day. It has put out a clarion call to churches, the international community, civil society groups and individuals to condemn the apartheid, ethnic cleansing and genocide Israel is committing against Palestinians, to support humanitarian assistance, and to press for a ceasefire and a just peace. Much of the surrounding land has been made into a wasteland as a result of the wall and highway that stands behind. Our Muslim guide warmly welcomed our Christian group, highlighting important biblical figures who are also venerated in Islam. In contrast, we saw a badly damaged side door leading into the mosque, which the Israeli military had battered down two years ago when raiding the mosque. The door remains in shambles because Israel refuses permission to repair it.
